What’s calling you in 2016?

The new year is beginning.

What do you intend to do with it?

You can launch into it head on.

You can take it one day at a time and see what unfolds.

You can bury your nose in your planner and get all the important things scheduled.

You can paint, draw, or collage about your dreams and hopes.

You can meditate and pray for insight.

All of these are effective, even beautiful ways to welcome the new year.

Before you tell your life what you intend to do with it, listen for what it intends to do with you.”
~ Parker Palmer

Do you ever wonder what’s calling you?

I used to struggle between trusting my heart, my gut, or my busy brain when contemplating plans for my year.

Do I plan logistics first, and then find room for the joyous things that fill me up?

Do I make room for the nourishing things first, but risk forgetting or neglecting important commitments and responsibilities?

Do I set realistic goals based on what I’ve done in the past, or reach for something bigger and brighter?

Stress! So much unease comes from trying to find the “right way.” The resulting uncertainty can paralyze and preventing you from starting anything at all.

If this sounds familiar, there’s only one thing to do:

Listen

Listen beneath the mind’s busy activity for a wise voice inside you. Listen under the heart’s longing for your own truth. Even deeper than your gut’s intuition, listen for something sacred within to guide your steps into the new year.

To hear this wise voice of guidance within you, two things are essential and one is optional. The essential ones are:

Sacred space

Quiet

Sacred space means leaving behind, however momentarily, the distractions of the world to enter an inner place free from opinions, agendas, and conflict. Within this intentional quiet, guidance can bubble up into your awareness.

In that quiet space, sometimes we hear, but feel unsure, so the third aspect of listening is:

Witnessing

Receiving gentle affirmation from others can assist you in trusting the insights you uncover about your path.

You’re invited

In honor of the new year, I’m creating a sacred circle to support you in finding that voice of guidance within.

Over four weeks, we will practice inviting your wily, beautiful self to approach with wisdom about what calls to you.

In this space, you will have an opportunity to listen for what your life wants to do with you this year, to quell the fearful mental spinning, and uncover soul-level trust about what calls to you.

How it works

Prepare: You bring a pen and paper and arrange to be uninterrupted for 90 minutes in support of creating sacred space. While this second aspect may be challenging, the results and insights are worth the effort.

Gather: All in the circle gather together by calling into a conference service at the same time. After a short welcome, I review group agreements (confidentiality, preventing interruptions, and abstaining from advice-giving).

Reading and reflection: Then I’ll share a reading from a poet or other writer familiar with the terrain of the soul, meant to invoke clarity for your own purpose. As a group, we allow the reading to settle into our consciousness and, in silence, notice whatever arises. After a few moments, I share the same reading a second time.

Listening: Our group honors silence for about five to seven minutes. Though this amount of silence may feel odd at first, the intention is to create space for noticing what arises in you in response to the message. During this time, you may get information or not, however there’s space for it to show up.

Optional sharing: The remaining time in the call is for optional sharing of your response to any part of the reading. We close by expressing gratitude as you feel moved.

Our intention

This gentle process allows you to access an entirely different kind of information than you might have ever experienced. With four weeks of intentional listening, you may feel less confusion, more openness, and more clarity about your next steps.

In this safe and sacred space, you may uncover what is essential in your life right now as you proceed into the new year.
